Fitness for beginners - what and when to eat before exercising
Hey everyone, in today's blog we discuss eating before working out, and the many questions surrounding this topic.
A few of the frequent questions I get asked are "Scott, what shall I eat before I train?!"
"How long should I wait before I work out after eating?"
"Are their any foods I should avoid eating before I work out?"
Let's discuss and break down each answer individually.
So, the first and most common question:
What should I eat before I train?
Scott's answer: depending on the type of exercise and duration of exercise you're going to perform, I find along with my clients and athletes that a small serving of yoghurt and a piece of fruit are 2 great combinations to boost energy, fuel our bodies and muscles without loading up too much on calories and carbohydrates.
This can have a negative effect and cause bloating and stomach issues during exercise.
How long should I wait after eating before I work out?
Scott's answer: after a small meal/snack, I believe 90 mins - 2 hours is a good time period to allow the food to settle and allow the digestion process to take its course.
This will stop any uncomfortable feeling whilst training and minimise any sick feeling or lethargy.
Are their any foods I should be avoiding before I work out?
Scott's answer: yes, through client experience and feedback, I have found foods high in starch such as white bread can have a negative effect on energy production and recovery during exercise.
These starchy foods, or as we know them "starchy carbohydrates", will cause the body to feel slow and sluggish, thus slowing us down and making exercise a lot tougher and harder on our bodies.
Starchy foods take a lot longer to break down and digest, making them not an ideal choice for a quick energy release.
My advice is to grab 2 pieces of fruit such as an apple and a banana, chop them up and add them to 100g of greek yoghurt.
This is my FAVOURITE pre-exercise energy boost.
